You Say It's Your Birthday ...

... it's my birthday too (yeah)! Yes, I'm afraid it's that time again -- another year older and even more grey hairs. It's funny how your internal age doesn't keep up with your actual age. In my head I stopped counting at around 27, so I actually have to stop and think when someone asks me my age. I may be 30 something, but there's definitely a part of me that still doesn't feel "all grown up" yet. Every once in a while I have to pinch myself and think, "Oh my goodness I'm somebody's mom. Actually, I'm two somebodies' mom!" And that isn't even counting my bonus mom status with the big kids. Sure, I wipe little butts and noses, make lunches, drive carpool, sing lullabies, attend junior high basketball games, and help with homework, but I don't feel like a "real" grown up yet (since, obviously, our parents are the real deal). I wonder if anybody ever really does ...

I did have a very nice birthday. Even though Dad was working, he made sure I had a nice day. We went out to dinner for a little birthday celebration earlier in the week, since Grandma and Grandpa offered some birthday babysitting and treated us to dinner. As always, I used a vacation day and took my birthday off of work. Once you're past the birthday crown and bringing cupcakes to class stage of your life, taking the day off of work is a good way to still make your birthday special.

Molly started off the day with a bang by suprising me with a stealth diaper blow out. Usually she does audible diaper loads, so when I picked her up to strap her in the car seat, I wasn't expecting to discover poop everywhere. In addition to that less-than-perfect start to my day, I had totally forgotten that I needed to renew my driver's license and my license plates, so I had to run to the DMV this morning. There's definitely nothing to recommend that errand, especially since it results in a new driver's license picture that will surely be even more hideous than the previous photo. But, a quick stop at the coffee shop for a decaf cappucino made up for the tedious infringments on my mini holiday. My sisters came down later in the day and took me and the babies out to lunch. Max and Molly were happy to see their aunties (and were very well behaved) and I enjoyed seeing everyone.

I've been having fun playing with my iTrip and I'm looking forward to using my new dutch oven to make Jim Lahey's (now infamous) no-knead bread recipe. It was nice to have an extra day off just to play with the babies and visit with family (and stand in line at the Secretary of State). I had every intention of staying up late and indulging in some serious "me" time after the babies went to bed, but I'm already starting to get tired. *sigh* I suppose I'll probably end up doing the grown up, responsible thing and go to bed early. Sheesh, I really am getting old! ;)

I feel the EXACT same way! I am so happy that someone else was able to verbalize it for me! Am I really a grown up? Am I really responsible enough to be two somebodies momma? It's crazy, isn't it? I still feel like a kid inside. When did we get so old? :)

Happy, happy birthday!
